This workshop is appropriate for psychologists, professional counselors, social workers, marriage and family therapists, school counselors, and other professionals who provide services in the healing arts.
Shelly Sowell, M.Ed., NCC, LMHC (FL) counsels and creates from an integrated wellness approach that includes developmental, relational-cultural, and body-centered models of therapy and healing. Shelly has worked as a counselor, educator, consultant and/or mindfulness instructor since 2004. She received her master’s degree from Vanderbilt University, where she went on to work as a psychotherapist. Shelly then moved to Miami, Florida, where she worked with The Institute of Child and Family Health, an agency that serves underprivileged populations in the greater Miami area, and later joined the Mind Spectrum Institute, a group psychotherapy and wellness practice. In addition, she co-created a Mindful Living program, which involved teaching Mindfulness-Based Life Skills to students, training faculty in mindfulness and inner resilience practices, and creating programs for parents. Shelly’s work also extended to running mindfulness therapy groups for residents at an intensive residential treatment program for girls and women with eating disorders.
In 2010, Shelly moved to the Los Angeles, California area where she has a wellness practice and creates mindful wellness programming for local schools and community agencies. Shelly has been on the teaching staff at Peace 4 Kids, an organization that provides services for foster and at-risk youth from South Los Angeles neighborhoods. Currently, she is working with the Inner Kids Program, which provides mindfulness training for educators and clinicians. She is passionate about helping people bring deeper awareness and balance to their lives, in order to create more meaningful and inspired living. In this one-day workshop Shelly Sowell will explore the emerging field of mindfulness and its potential use in individual and group psychotherapy with children, adolescents, and adults. Shelly will present on traditional disciplines of mindfulness as well as modern variations based on the fields of medicine, neuroscience, psychology, and education. The workshop will examine the benefits of mindfulness practice and how it changes the brain in a culture of technology, the ethics of using mindfulness, and the relationship of mindfulness work to interpersonal neurobiology. Shelly will also present the professional benefits of practicing personal mindfulness as a psychotherapist. Finally, the workshop will include a comprehensive look at life span development models and how mindfulness work can help facilitate developmental growth. Through lecture, audio/visual, experiential, and case example work, participants will receive practical tools for integrating mindfulness into their personal and professional practice.
Workshop Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:
Explain the connection between traditional disciplines of mindfulness and modern variations based on the fields of medicine, neuroscience, psychology, and education;
Discern between mindfulness practices and relaxation techniques;
Choose a mindfulness practice that is developmentally appropriate for a client and responsive to the client’s individual needs, goals, and diagnosis.
Practice basic mindfulness techniques and teach them to clients
Explain how personal mindfulness practice can aid in a clinician’s ability to develop rapport and attune to a client’s needs.
